Take a Knee

I should have titled this post "Tuesday Morning Rant."  It's been a very long weekend.  The world apparently did not end on September 23rd.  It was also the one year anniversary of my daughter's ovarian cancer diagnosis.  Folks are still digging out from floods and hurricane damage in both Houston and South Florida.  Then there is the devastation in the Caribbean by not one, but three hurricanes.  And Puerto Rico has been ravaged by the latest hurricane, Maria.

But, of course, the most important topic on everyone's mind is whether or not NFL players are disrespectful when kneeling during the National Anthem.  Once again, the great orange puppet- master has yanked everyone's strings and sent the Internet into a Twitter frenzy.  All because he wanted to divert attention away from his failing administration and the soon to be doomed healthcare repeal.

What's everyone looking at?

By now everyone knows what the orange idiot said in Alabama.  Everyone has seen or heard the NFL's response.  Unfortunately, once again, we have played right into the puppet-master's little stubby hands.  Prior to last Friday, did anyone really give a hoot about NFL players kneeling during the National Anthem?  Honestly, I don't like it, but I understand their right to do so.  Now, everyone has an opinion - another reason the Internet is a Pandora's Box - and wants to voice it.  Loudly!

Not since last year's election have I seen so many Internet firefights over an issue that truly is not an issue.  This has become about race, workplace rights, patriotism, historical context...

In sports, a coach will tell players to "take a knee" before or after practice in order to rest and refocus the players for important information or an inspirational message.  In football, the quarterback takes a knee to help run out the clock to end the game.  Taking a knee in the military has long been a tradition to honor fallen comrades.  (It can also mean to take a breather for military personnel out in the field of combat.)

I think it's time for all of us to "take a knee."  Take a breather...refocus on what's important...honor those who have served our great nation by not playing into the puppet-master's games...and simply let the clock run out on another culture war that neither side will ever win.

By the way, I'm still kneeling...but it's more from old age!
